For 2023, the Mercedes-Benz CLA-class compact four-door is the entry point for the company’s sedan lineup, and it’s equipped in a way that does justice to the three-pointed star on its grille. While it shares its platform with the high-strung Mercedes-AMG CLA models, it trades their high Scoville Heat Units rating for a less peppery flavor: it’s a laid back, low-stress daily commuter with style and appointments appropriate to a Mercedes. Inside, it features premium furnishings, plenty of amenities, and a large, infotainment-and-instrument cluster touchscreen that extends halfway across the dash. An adequately peppy turbocharged four-cylinder engine sends its power through front- or all-wheel drive. The CLA is the sleeker, sportier-looking version of the A-class sedan, which is discontinued after the 2022 model year. If you prefer the conventional styling of the decomissioned A-Class you can find solace in competitors like the Audi A3, the BMW 2-series Gran Coupe, or the Cadillac CT4.
